Han Solo Happy Wisdom? Hun Clothespeg Heifer Wilson? Hen-Pecked Heavy Bison? The hardest thing about drinking Bridge Road Brewers’ Hans Klopek’s Hefe Weizen is trying to remember what it’s called. Maybe it’s best to ask for the beer with Ned Kelly in lederhosen on it.

Once you’ve managed to get your tongue around the name of this German-inspired wheat beer you’re in for a treat. There’s a lot going on in this humble bottle. This beer is worth drinking from a glass, rather than the bottle. It’s bursting with aromas and flavours that cut through the malty wheat base.

Sharp on the nose, Hans Kloper has sweet tang at first taste. This gives way to a fruity finish, which will definitely have you thinking about bananas. The label will tell you this beer brings up vision of beer halls and busty waitresses, but it’s equally reminiscent of a quiet country pub, a steak and a surly bartender. It’s suggested that you pair the hefe weizen with seafood or a light meal, but there’s enough body here for it to matched with something a little more meaty.

This is a beer to brood over and savour. Let the flavours linger in your mouth between sips, and try to pick out as many as you can. It’s a cloudy brew, one that invites contemplation. This a beer you could discuss your life story over, if you can find someone to listen to you. Offer to buy them a Hans Klopek and they’ll almost certainly say yes.
